Learn Domain Mapping for your WordPress website.
Domain mapping is a feature that allows you to point your domains to your primary hosting account. For example, if you have any URLs that you need to point to your website, domain mapping is the feature you need. Even though it may seem like a complex task to do, this guide will show you how to do it easily.
One of the best features of WordPress is WordPress Multisite that permits you to make multiple sites from a single WordPress installation. You can create a new website by utilizing the same username and secret key. Additionally, you can even permit users to sign up at your site and set up their individual websites on your domain. You can use the same database on all your WordPress sites and also make a different table for each. Keep in mind that you can’t use separate domain names for multisite. To start off you require a great hosting platform. My pick would be Cloudways, a Managed WordPress hosting provider, because it provides 1-click install of WordPress Multisite and makes it simple to manage websites.
First thing first, you need to login to Cloudways.
After that, you need to create a new server.
In this area, you need to click on the WordPress icon and select “WordPress Multisite”.
Select your location and click the Launch Server button. It will take a couple of minutes to install WordPress Multisite on your server.
Now you need to go to the application. On the application page, you will see your application credentials.
WordPress Multisite Admin Panel Setting
Login to the admin panel and go to Tools >> Network Setup. It will request you to deactivate all plugins.
To do that, go to the navigation bar and click on Plugin >> Installed Plugin and select all plugins to deactivate them.
When all plugins have been deactivated, navigate to Tools >> Network Setup and fill in the details.
Presently there are two methods to get to WordPress Multisite:
Sub-domains: This method makes sub-domains from your WordPress Multisite.
For example if you have a domain named “abc.com”, this strategy will make WordPress installations like “abc.xyz.com” or “abc1.xyz.com” etc.
Sub-directories: This method introduces WordPress sites in different directories located within the same folder.
For example you have a folder named /WordPress/, this method will makes WordPress installations like “/WordPress/site1/” or “/WordPress/site2” etc.
If you want to add sub-directories, check out the process here: http://www.dzinemart.com/blog/how-to-integrate-wordpress-multisite/
I will be using the Sub-Domain method for this article.
I am now going to discuss step by step the sub-domain method of creating multisite.
Step One: Domain Mapping Cloudways
Go to your application and go to Navigate >> Domain Management and fill the details as shown in the image below:
Step Two: Sub-Domain Installation In WordPress
After successful installation, you’ll see the message shown below. Edit “wp-config.php” and “.htaccess” as demonstrated in the picture:
Once you complete these steps, your network is enabled and configured. You will now have to login again.
After logging in, go to the site panel and click Add New to create a new site. Navigate to Sites >> Add New and fill the details as shown in the image below.
Step Three: Creating Sub-Domain In NameCheap
Firstly, you’ll have to inform your domain registrar which initially provided your URL that you’re planning on moving. Make it clear that you need to transfer but leave it registered with them since WordPress does not acknowledge incoming domain transfers. Your registrar should be able to walk you through what you have to do.
Go to your namecheap account, Navigate to >> Domain List and fill in the details as shown in the image below.
It will take around half an hour for the process to complete.
That’s it, If you have carefully read this article, everything should be on point.
